You suffering from cholesterol !!!

If you want to steer clear of the devastating side effects of statin drugs and still get your cholesterol numbers looking good, eating almonds may be just the right choice. Studies
have shown that eating a nutritious diet that includes almonds sends LDL numbers plummeting. And there's more. Eating almonds provides super strength protection against diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and even weight gain and obesity.

In a four week study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association, 46 healthy human subjects were divided into three groups. The control group ate a low saturated fat diet based on milled whole-wheat cereals and low-fat dairy foods. The second group ate the same diet and also took the statin drug lovastatin. The third group ate a diet high in almonds plus plant sterols, non-meat protein and fiber. LDL cholesterol decreased by 8 percent in the control group, 30 percent in the statin group, and 28 percent in the almond group.

Another study, published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that heart disease risk correlates not only with cholesterol levels, but also with inflammation of blood vessels. Following a diet that includes almonds effectively lowers not only LDL cholesterol levels but also C-reactive protein levels, a key marker of inflammation. Inflammation is hard on the heart because it increases the development of atherosclerosis (clogged arteries) and causes the heart to have to pump faster and harder to get its job done.

In this study, 34 people followed a dietary plan, called the Portfolio Eating Plan, which included almonds. In this group, C-reactive protein levels fell 24 percent from baseline, an amount similar to the reduction achieved by taking a statin drug, only without the life draining side effects of taking the drug.

Another study examining this same group and reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that when directly compared to first-generation statin drugs, the Portfolio Eating Plan diet with its emphasis on almonds is just as effective in lowering LDL cholesterol below the recommended range for heart disease prevention.

Five large human epidemiological studies, including the Nurses Health Study, all found that nut consumption is linked to lower risk for heart disease. Researchers studying data from the Nurses study found that substituting nuts for an equivalent amount of carbohydrate in an average diet resulted in a 30 percent reduction in heart disease risk. They found a 45 percent reduction when fat from nuts was substituted for saturated fats.

Saffron is beneficial for health ?

There are supposedly several beneficial uses of saffron. Benefits may include treating depression, asthma, atherosclerosis, and painful menstrual periods, among other conditions. There is some evidence that saffron may have anti-cancer effects and may help lower cholesterol and triglycerides. Saffron is also sometimes used topically to help with certain conditions, such as baldness. It is not known if medicinal uses of saffron are safe for children.

   Saffron Benefits: An Overview
Saffron crocus is a flowering plant that is usually used as a spice. However, it is also used in herbal supplements. Saffron supplements are often claimed to help with the following conditions :

Depression
Asthma
Insomnia
Cancer
Hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis)
Coughing
Whooping cough
Gas
Fright and shock
Spitting up blood
Pain
Painful menstrual periods (dysmenorrhea)
Indigestion or heartburn
Premature ejaculation
Dry skin
Baldness (when applied to the scalp).

Some of these benefits of saffron are more valid than others  . As with many supplements, claims for the benefits of saffron are sometimes exaggerated, and these claims must be evaluated critically. Most importantly, it is essential to remember that natural products should not be used carelessly, as many can be quite toxic (for instance, many poisons are natural products).

   How Does Saffron Work?
It is not exactly clear how saffron works. It seems that there are a few different active compounds in it. Early research indicates that some of these compounds may have anti-cancer activity, may stimulate the secretion of stomach acids, and can stimulate the contraction of smooth muscles (such as the uterus). Compounds in saffron may also have some effects on lowering cholesterol and triglycerides.

5 tips to prevent hair loss

It's better to use natural products to stop hairfall than to go in for expensive parlour treatments, that may not help the problem.

Try the following easy tips at home and see how effective they are in reducing hair loss!

1. Hot oil treatments: Take any natural oil - olive, coconut, canola - and heat it up so that it is warm, but not too hot. Massage it gently into your scalp. Put on a shower cap and leave it on for an hour, then shampoo your hair.

2. Natural juices: You can rub your scalp with either garlic juice, onion juice or ginger juice
. Leave it on overnight and wash it thoroughly in the morning.

3. Get a head massage: Massaging your scalp for a few minutes daily will help stimulate circulation. Good circulation in the scalp keeps hair follicles active. Circulation may be improved through massage by using a few drops of lavender or bay essential oil in an almond or sesame oil base.

4. Antioxidants: Apply warm green tea (two bags brewed in one cup of water) on your scalp and leave this mixture on for an hour and then rinse. Green tea contains antioxidants which prevent hair loss and boost hair growth.

5. Practice meditation: Believe it or not, most of the times, the root cause for hair loss is stress and tension. Meditation can help in reducing that and restore hormonal balance.

Best lunch

Health benefits of dates are uncountable, as this fruit is affluent in natural fibres. Dates are even rich in several vitamins and minerals. These natural products contain oil, calcium, sulphur, iron, potassium, phosphorous, manganese, copper and magnesium which are advantageous for health. It is said that consumption of one date daily is necessary for a balanced and healthy diet. Dates help in fighting constipation, intestinal disorders, weight gain, heart problems, sexual weakness, diarrhoea and abdominal cancer.

Health benefits of dates have made them the best nourishment for muscles development. People consume dates in several ways, like mixing the paste of the dates with milk, yoghurt or with bread or butter to make the food tasty and healthy. This paste is beneficial for both adults and children, especially during the time of recovery. According to the modern medicine survey, it is known that dates are useful in preventing abdominal cancer. It is also seen that many Muslims break their fast by eating dates and water according to their traditions. Breaking fast with eating dates helps us to avoid overeating of the food after the fast. When the body absorbs the nutritional value of the dates, the feeling of hunger gets pacified.

Walking, how to get started ?

Walking is a gentle, low-impact exercise that can ease you into a higher level of fitness and health. Walking is a form of exercise accessible to just about everybody. It's safe, simple and doesn't require practice. And the health benefits are many. Here's more about why walking is good for you, and how to get started with a walking program.

Benefits of walking  :

Walking, like other exercise, can help you achieve a number of important health benefits. Walking can help you:

  • Lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (the "bad" cholesterol) ;
  • Raise high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (the "good" cholesterol) ;
  • Lower your blood pressure ;
  • Reduce your risk of or manage type 2 diabetes ;
  • Manage your weight ;
  • Stay strong and fit .
All it takes to reap these benefits is a routine of brisk walking. It doesn't get much simpler than that. And you can forget the "no pain, no gain" talk. Research shows that regular, brisk walking can reduce the risk of heart attack by the same amount as more vigorous exercise, such as jogging.

Preparation helps avoid injury  :

Walking isn't as likely to lead to injuries as other types of exercise. Still, take time to prepare yourself to prevent injuries, such as blisters or muscle pain.
Get the right gear
Be sure to wear comfortable footwear : Choose shoes with proper arch support, a firm heel and thick flexible soles to cushion your feet and absorb shock. Before you buy a new pair, be sure to walk in them in the store.

Also dress in loosefitting, comfortable clothing and in layers if you need to adjust to changing temperature. If you walk outside, choose clothes appropriate for the weather. Avoid rubberized materials, as they don't allow perspiration to evaporate. Wear bright colors or reflective tape after dark so that motorists can see you.

Use proper technique : Walking is a great exercise because it's so simple to do. But using the correct posture and movements is essential.

Warm up : Spend about five minutes walking slowly to warm up your muscles. You can walk in place if you want. Increase your pace until you feel warm.
Stretch : After warming up, stretch your muscles before walking. Include the calf stretch, quadriceps stretch, hamstring stretch and side (iliotibial) stretch.

Cool down after each walking session : To reduce stress on your heart and muscles, end each walking session by walking slowly for about five minutes. Then, repeat your stretches.

Eggs, is that true ?

Yolk or smoke -- the first is almost as bad for you as the second, London researchers have found.

When it comes to raising your risk of heart attacks and strokes, eating egg yolks is nearly as bad as smoking, the Western University researchers found.

"If you are at risk of heart attack and stroke, you shouldn't eat egg yolks," said Dr. David Spence, a Robarts Research Institute scientist.

"The problem is, if you expect to live a long time you are going to be at risk of heart attacks and strokes," said Spence, who's also director of the Stroke Prevention and Atherosclerosis Research Centre in London.

"Why would you want to be eating something that makes the plaque in your arteries build up faster and make your heart attack and stroke come on sooner?"

Western researchers studied 1,231 patients, using ultrasound to measure plaque buildup on the inside wall of their arteries.

Most heart attacks and strokes are caused when built-up plaque ruptures.

Patients in the study filled out questionnaires about lifestyle and medications, including consumption of egg yolks and cigarettes.

While the buildup of plaque was a straight-line increase for people after age 40, it rose exponentially for smokers and regular egg yolk eaters.

Researchers also found people eating three or more egg yolks a week had significantly more    plaque on their artery walls than those eating two or fewer yolks a week.

Eating yolks triggered plaque build-up at two-thirds the rate for people who are smokers.

"In the long haul, eggs are not OK for most Canadians," Spence said.

The research was published online Monday in the international journal Atherosclerosis.

Monday, Egg Farmers of Canada rejected the study findings.

Karen Harvey, a nutrition officer and registered dietician with the national group, said it's unfair to compare egg yolks with smoking.

"It goes without saying that smoking is considered one of the most harmful activities when it comes to your personal health and wellness. We have decades of clinical, scientific research that demonstrates no link between egg consumption and an increased risk for heart disease," Harvey said.

Eggs are one of the most nutritious foods and the yolk a major source of an egg's vitamins and minerals, she said.

The problem with egg yolks, Spence said, is the recommended daily intake of cholesterol for people at risk of heart attack and strokes is less than 200 milligrams a day. But one jumbo egg yolk contains 237 mg of cholesterol.

There's no problem consuming egg whites, which are an excellent source of protein, he said.

How grapes protects the heart

Consuming grapes may help protect heart health in people with metabolic syndrome, according to new research published in the Journal of Nutrition. Researchers observed a reduction in key risk factors for heart disease in men with metabolic syndrome: reduced blood pressure, improved blood flow and reduced inflammation. Natural components found in grapes, known as polyphenols, are thought to be responsible for these beneficial effects.

The randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover study, led by principal investigator Dr. Maria Luz Fernandez and Jacqueline Barona, a PhD student in Dr. Fernandez’ lab at the Department of Nutritional Sciences of the University of Connecticut, recruited men between 30 and 70 years of age with metabolic syndrome. The study is believed to be the first to look at the impact of grapes on metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that occur together – increased blood pressure, a high blood sugar level, excess body fat around the waist or low HDL (the good cholesterol) and increased blood triglycerides – significantly increasing the risk for heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Metabolic syndrome is a major public health concern, and is on the rise in the U.S.

How to gain weight

Unintentional weight gain can be caused by many different things.

As you age, our metabolism slows down. This can cause weight gain if you eat too much, eat the wrong foods, or do not get enough exercise.

A medical problem or use of certain medication may also make you gain weight.

Medications that can cause weight gain include corticosteroids and drugs used to treat bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and depression.

Hormone changes can also cause unintentional weight gain. This may be due to:

  • Cushing syndrome
  • Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid, or low thyroid)
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome
  • Menopause
  • Bloating, or swelling due to a buildup of fluid in the tissues can cause weight gain. This may occur with menstruation, heart or kidney failure, preeclampsia, or certain medications.

If you quit smoking, you might gain weight. Most people who quit smoking gain 4 - 10 pounds in the first 6 months after quitting. Some gain as much as 25 - 30 pounds. This weight gain is not simply due to eating more.

6 Health Benefits of Parsley

Anti-Cancer
Studies show that myristicin, an organic compound found in the essential oil of parsley, not only inhibits tumor formation (especially in the lungs), but also activates the enzyme glutathione-S-transferase, which helps the molecule glutathione attach to, and fight against, oxidized molecules. Myristicin can also neutralize carcinogens like benzopyrene in cigarette smoke that can pass through the body, consequently fighting against colon and prostate cancer.

Antioxidants
Parsley is rich with an antioxidant arsenal that includes luteolin, a flavonoid that searches out and eradicates free radicals in the body that cause oxidative stress in cells. Luteolin also promotes carbohydrate metabolism and serves the body as an anti-inflammatory agent. Furthermore, two tablespoons of parsley contain 16% of the RDA of vitamin C and over 12% of the RDA of vitamin A - two powerful antioxidants.

Anti-Inflammatory
Along with luteolin, the vitamin C found in parsley serves as an effective anti-inflammatory agent within the body. When consumed regularly, they combat the onset of inflammatory disorders, such as osteoarthritis (the degeneration of joint cartilage and the underlying bone) and rheumatoid arthritis (a disease causing inflammation in the joints).

Healthy Immune System
The vitamin C and vitamin A found in parsley serve to strengthen the body's immune system, though in different ways. Vitamin C is necessary for collagen, the main structural protein found in connective tissue. This essential nutrient will not only accelerate the body's ability to repair wounds, but also maintain healthy bones and teeth.

Vitamin A, on the other hand, fortifies the entry points into the human body, such as mucous
membranes, the lining of the eyes, and respiratory, urinary and intestinal tracts. Moreover, lymphocytes, or white blood cells, rely on vitamin A to fight infection in the body.

A Healthy Heart
Homocysteine, an amino acid that occurs in the body, threatens the body's blood vessels when its levels become too high. Luckily, the folate (or vitamin B9) found in parsley helps convert homocysteine into harmless molecules. A regular garnish of parsley can help ward off cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attack, stroke, and atherosclerosis.

Vitamin K
Two tablespoons of parsley have a whopping 153% of the RDA of vitamin K, which is necessary for the synthesis of osteocalcin, a protein that strengthens the composition of our bones. Vitamin K also prevents calcium build-up in our tissue that can lead to atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease and stroke.

Finally, the vitamin K found in parsley is essential for synthesizing sphingolipid, the fat needed to maintain the myelin sheath around our nerves, and therefore our nervous system as a whole.

A Fenugreek, did you know ?

What is Fenugreek?

Fenugreek, Trigonella foenum-graecum L., is an erect annual herb native to southern Europe and Asia. Undoubtedly one of the oldest cultivated medicinal plants, fenugreek is widely grown today in the Mediterranean countries, Argentina, France, India, North Africa, and the United States as a food, condiment, medicinal, dye, and forage plant (11.1-128). The plant reaches a height of 0.3 to 0.8 meters and has trifoliate leaves. White flowers appear in early summer and develop into long, slender, yellow-brown pods containing the brown seeds of fenugreek commerce.

Fenugreek and Breastfeeding

Fenugreek seeds contain hormone precursors that increase milk supply. Scientists do not know for sure how this happens. Some believe it is possible because breasts are modified sweat glands, and fenugreek stimulates sweat production. It has been found that fenugreek can increase a nursing mother's milk supply within 24 to 72 hours after first taking the herb. Once an adequate level of milk production is reached, most women can discontinue the fenugreek and maintain the milk supply with adequate breast stimulation. Many women today take fenugreek in a pill form (ground seeds placed in capsules). The pills can be found at most vitamin and nutrition stores and at many supermarkets and natural foods stores. Fenugreek can also be taken in tea form, although tea is believed to be less potent than the pills and the tea comes with a bitter taste that can be hard to stomach. Fenugreek is not right for everyone. The herb has caused aggravated asthma symptoms in some women and has lowered blood glucose levels in some women with diabetes.

when a child has a fever

What is the normal temperature for a child?
If you take the temperature in your child's mouth or from the ear, the normal temperature is 36 to 36.8ºC (97.7 to 99.1ºF).
Thermometers
Traditional mercury thermometers are being phased out, although many are still around.

Mercury is a highly toxic substance if taken into the body – which can be done through skin contact, breathing in the vapour or swallowing it. All these risks can apply to the fragile glass thermometer if it's broken, for example by a child biting it. If you have a mercury thermometer, check with your local council how to dispose of it safely.
Modern probe-type digital thermometers are quicker to use, more reliable and are much safer if bitten.

Taking a child's temperature
al Helvetica, sans-serif; A body temperature reading can be taken from the mouth, armpit, ear, skin surface or the rectum.
Although a rectal temperature reading is the most accurate and is quite often used in hospital, it's not necessary to be so precise when taking temperature readings at home.
Rectal temperature reading is therefore not recommended for home use.
Rectal temperatures are the closest to 'core' temperature and are about 0.5ºC (2ºF) higher than readings taken from the mouth or ear.
Temperature readings from the armpit are not very reliable and are about 0.5ºC lower than mouth temperature.
Thermometer strips that are placed on the child's forehead are popular and give a rough guide, only.
Most of the time the exact level of a child’s temperature is not particularly important.
In practical terms, the temperature reading will be enough to give an indication of whether a fever is present.
Fever does not require treating. Only if the child is miserable, should paracetamol or ibuprofen be considered to make the child feel better, by reducing their temperature.
 ° - Ear temperature
If you are willing to pay for an ear thermometer, this is a quick method and will give a read-out in seconds. Ear thermometers rely on measuring infrared (heat) radiation from the eardrum.
Other types of thermometer (such as the probe type) are not suitable for taking ear readings and must never be placed within the ear canal.

Some ear thermometers are adjustable, so they can be made suitable for adults or children.
To get a reliable temperature measurement, the thermometer must be used exactly as directed.
When you buy the thermometer: ask the salesperson how to use it, and read the instructions carefully before you start.
Especially with small children, ear thermometers require a steady hand to find the right spot.
The ear canal has a natural curve – so to ensure that the thermometer is pointing towards the eardrum, it may be necessary to pull the top part of your child's ear gently upwards during the reading.
If your child has been lying with their head on a warm pillow, or has just come inside out of the cold, you will need to wait 10 to 15 minutes before the ear can provide an accurate measurement of body temperature.
  °° - Under the armpit
This method is not good for small children, since they will not stay still for long enough.
With children old enough to co-operate and keep still you need to keep the thermometer under their armpit for at least 5 minutes.
   °°° - From the mouth
This method is not suitable for a young child because they may bite the thermometer and break it.
The thermometer is placed in the mouth, under the tongue.
It will take two to three minutes to measure the temperature accurately.
If your child has just eaten anything hot or cold, you will need to wait 10 minutes before an accurate temperature can be taken.
What can I do if my child has a temperature?

   I - Liquids
A child with a high temperature needs more liquid than usual because the fever will make them sweat a lot.
Make sure your child drinks plenty of liquids – a teaspoonful every few minutes, if necessary. Provided they drink plenty of liquids, it won't matter too much if they eat very little for a couple of days.

   II - Rest
A child with a high temperature also needs rest and sleep.
They do not have to be in bed all day, if they feel like playing. But they must have the opportunity to lie down.
   III - Body temperature
You do not sweat out a fever.
If your child shivers while their temperature is rising, it's okay to cover them with a duvet or a blanket. But as soon as your child's temperature has stabilised and he or she starts sweating, they need to cool down.
Your child only needs to wear underwear or a nappy, which will help the heat escape from the body. Make sure their room is ventilated and cool, but not draughty.
   IV - Medicines
If you want to use medication to get the temperature down, ask your doctor or pharmacist. They will be able to tell you what to use and how much. The dosage will depend on both the age and weight of your child.
Paracetamol suspension (eg Calpol) is the usual choice and ibuprofen (eg Nurofen for children) is an alternative. Aspirin should not be given to children under 16 years of age.
Attention
Sick children are often tired and bad-tempered. They sleep a lot – and when they are awake, they want their parents around all the time. They might whine and act younger than their age.
It's okay to give in and spoil a child a little when they're sick. Read to them, play with them and spend time with them. This is not the time to teach a child good manners.
A child usually recovers and will soon be back to their old self again.
When is a fever critical?
Look at your child and use common sense. Do they look exhausted or ill? Are they behaving differently? If the answer is yes, call the doctor.
  • You should also call your doctor if:
  • you have a young child, less than three months old, who runs any fever
  • your child cries and cries, without you being able to comfort them, and doesn't wake up easily
  • your child has a temperature over 38ºC (101.3ºF) for more than three days
  • your child has just had an operation
  • your child doesn't seem to be getting better.

If your child experiences any of the following symptoms with a fever, call your doctor.
  • Stiff neck.
  • Affected by bright light.
  • Hallucinations.
  • Red rash or blue or purple dots or patches.
  • Trouble breathing.
  • Cramps or leg pains.
  • Continued vomiting or diarrhoea.
  • Continued tonsillitis.
  • Pain when urinating, or urinating more than usual.
  • Other illnesses.
